As a book reviewer and book awards judge, I get bombarded with book review requests during the holiday season as the contest deadline gets closer. Juggling life during the holidays is challenging enough. To find a quiet moment to read can be daunting, but at the same time is a welcomed relief from the rush and stress of the season. Granted, as a reviewer, reading is also a job and as books pile up on my shelves, it is sometimes hard not to feel stressed. However, I think I found a way to keep the busy days balanced by using the books as a decompressing tool. I found that it is all about scheduling your time day by day.
Most of us are used to following a schedule, but we forget that we are the master of our schedule and not the other way around. Below are some tricks in adapting your busy schedule to include reading moments to decompress.
Any time of the day is a good time to read a book.
We like to think that reading happens on a chair next to a window on a rainy day. Or maybe on our bed before we go to sleep. But the truth is that any time is a good time to pause and decompress through a good book. So, carry a book with you and take advantage of the unexpected time to read!
Take your book with you everywhere.
You can’t read unless you have a book with you! Keep your book in your purse or go green and keep it on your phone! I always carry a book with me. It is just something I’ve done since I was a pre-teen. Somehow, it made me feel like having wings ready to fly away from reality at a moment’s notice. At 59, I still feel the same way.
Pencil in some reading time on your schedule.
During my busiest years, I found that if I wanted to be able to do anything enjoyable in my life, I needed to pencil it into my schedule. So, I have always included working out, going shopping, and even hobbies in my agenda book. That is why scheduling reading time during the busiest season of the year doesn’t sound weird to me!
All in all, the holidays are a magical time, but they can also be overwhelming. Make the time to decompress by incorporating a little reading into your day, and make sure you stay cheery and happy to enjoy your family and friends. I hope you have a merry Holiday Season however you celebrate, and happy reading to all!
