“Marathon and Half-Marathon Training, One Day a Week” by John Timmerman offers practical advice on how to prepare for these events by training only once a week. Based on personal experience, Timmerman outlines a simple plan to achieve your marathon goals.
Simple, but not easy, the plan is not for novices. Though the subtitle of the book says, “It Can Be Done,” this book is not for beginning runners, people that are out of shape, or have other medical and/or physical limitations. Timmerman is a former Marine, a certified personal fitness trainer, and has completed numerous marathons and half-marathons.
Bored with his own training, Timmerman developed a challenge for himself to mix things up a bit, training just one day a week and increasing the distance of his run by one mile every week. He also trained in the same manner increasing the distance by two miles every week. This seems like a helpful method for those with a limited amount of time available to train effectively.
This book reads more like a memoir than training guide, as Timmerman goes into detail describing many of the marathons and half-marathons he trained for, and ran in, over the course of a two-year period. Much of the information included in the book is specific to certain events and how he performed in those races, where he stayed, recommendations about the courses and the towns/cities hosting the events. This information should prove valuable to those interested in these specific races. As someone in good overall physical shape, I was hoping to find more of a "how-to" type manual to build my endurance.
If you are an experienced runner, are in great shape and are overall healthy, the advice in John Timmerman’s book, “Marathon and Half-Marathon Training, One Day a Week” provides some great insight on how to take your training to the next level. For those aspiring to get to this stage, or just love a good success story, it’s a quick, enjoyable read.
