Peter Ryan’s “Edge of the Sawtooth” presents an amazing picture of the trials and tribulations of substance abuse and mental illness.
Rick Morrand, a local attorney, has a comfortable life and is trying to put his life as well as his daughter and granddaughter’s lives back to a semblance of normalcy after a history of drugs, mental illness, and promiscuity on the part of his daughter Chloe. Just when he thinks things are moving along smoothly, Chloe fails to pick up her daughter he knows in his gut something is wrong.
Chloe’s body is found at the bottom of the Sawtooth, and local authorities believe it to be suicide based on her history. It seems no one is particularly interested in finding the real cause of her death. Many townspeople, from the sheriff to those who have their secrets, want to lay this death to bed for fear their issues will come out. Rick decides to launch his own investigation into what happened to his daughter while at the same time trying to keep his granddaughter from the truth.
From the very first page the author keeps you in suspense but also keeps you guessing as to what happened to Chloe. He writes in a way that is easy to read and follow and puts you right in the action. His description of the mountains in Montana, and small town mentality show that he is very familiar and comfortable with the characters and lifestyle.
Ryan does a superb job of introducing each character at the right time and showing how each fit into the plot. I found the book to be captivating and suspenseful, with little sex and cursing, and one that kept me up wanting to finish my read. Having grown up in a small town where everyone knew everyone and their business, I felt right at home with all the people in the town.
Reader’s will be engrossed in “Edge of the Sawtooth” by Peter Ryan, especially with the characters and the interaction of each of those who would benefit from Chloe’s death. I highly recommend this read to all who desire a true suspense novel.
