“Victory Over Sin through the Word” is a short guide on how to overcome sin inside us. Author Andy B. Nakagawa is a born again Christian who provides six lessons in “spiritual warfare.” He claims that unlike most books, “Victory Over Sin through the Word” is intended get to the heart of the matter, and to be simple and short. He quotes the Bible frequently using Scripture as evidence, and asks the reader to reflect on the passages. He also lists steps in combating sin, and believes that once we combat the sin inside us, we can combat the sin around us.

While I commend Nakagawa for his vulnerability and insight, I found the writing to be dry, and wished that he offered more explanation and commentary. Grammatically speaking, there were not many mistakes; however, I do wish that the writing was a bit more engaging. I understand the author’s goal was to write a short and simple book on overcoming sin, and also that his intended audience was for born-again Christians. However, Scripture and the Christian concept of sin are more complex and difficult to grasp; I feel that there was very little guidance in “Victory Over Sin through the Word.” The author does have a chapter that is a study guide, however, the task of writing a short and simple guide on overcoming sin is daunting one.

I do recommend “Victory Over Sin through the Word” by Andy B. Nakagawa for people who are knowledgeable on the Bible and Scripture; the reflections are activities that they will enjoy and help deepen their understanding of sin and overcoming it. For someone who is just starting to learn about Christianity, or is unclear on certain teachings, “Victory Over Sin through the Word” does not provide enough explanation for the nuances and complexities of sin, but could be an enriching experience for those who want to deepen their understanding of sin and Christianity.
