This is a sensitive topic as many believe that using charity to get the attention of the media is unethical.  I thought the same thing, but after giving it some thought I changed my mind. If it’s true that I am getting media attention by announcing my donations or charity work or event – it is also true that I am giving media attention to my selected charity organization! So, using a charity event to get media exposure is not the problem, it is how we do it that matters. Below are some tips on how to be ethical by giving back!

·         Make sure the chosen charity event makes sense The why and where you choose to give to needs to genuinely matter to you. Are you passionate about it? Why? Does it matter to you because of your life experience? Does it have to do with your book’s topic or story?

·         Are you the Feature of the Headline or the Tagline? – If you are giving back because you are truly passionate about it you want to make sure that you are not the headline. Most people will most likely be curious about who is giving back and why anyway. There is no need to be pretentious about it.

·          Make a habit of it. – When we care about a topic, we do not give back just when a new book comes out! Keep yourself active in your charity in any way you can.

Giving back is rewarding. When you truly care about something, the rewards can come in more ways than one!
