Elyse and Gerry were not meant to be in their airplane seats, but through twist of fate, end up sitting next to each other, sparking their affair.  Neither is happy in their marriages, neither willing to leave, though Elyse has been contemplating leaving for a while now.  Gerry is unwilling to leave his wife, whom he loves.  She is just unwilling to have sex.  Elyse is completely unhappy.  Phil has no connection with her; he doesn’t even talk to her.  His communication is an occasional post-it with one or two words for Elyse to sift though and understand.   This chance twist of fate throws Elyse into discovery of herself, Gerry, her friends and her husband Phil.  She is happy for the first time in a long time.  Her friends are forced to re-discover love and relationships and come to conclusions of what each of those things mean to them.  Elyse discovers herself, the one person who matters and in the end decides what love is and what is fair and important to her.

This novel is near perfect.  It is the best novel I have read on this subject matter.  Elyse is real.  She is fair.  She wants to be seen, she wants to be loved and she wants to be herself.  The author takes you through her journey, discovery, life, thoughts, and realization that she married the wrong man.  She finds true friendship and companionship in Gerry that will never change, yet neither of them expect or want the other to leave their marriage.  This novel feels like real life.  It gives the sense that not all affairs are spiteful, mean or vindictive.  Elyse is a truly unhappy woman whose husband will also realize how unhappy he is.  They are drowning each other in their marriage.  Elyse is strong and realizes she is not willing to sacrifice happiness and love for the comforts of a status.  She is not willing to stay just because of what others think.  She owes more to herself, her husband and her daughter.

The book is funny and sexual.  “Love in Mid Air” by Kim Wright was a wonderful read that I did not want to put down.  It draws you in, keeps the characters real, and makes you feel like you are there sharing in the moments and understanding.  It made me thankful for my husband and our relationship.  I really understood and felt for Elyse and her reasons for wanting a chance at real happiness.  I would recommend this book to any adult reader, especially those who like the chick lit genre, or want a spicy romantic read.  It was a change of pace for the subject matter.  I gave this book four out of five stars because it was slow at parts.  This was very minimal.  It is a wonderful read for the beach, the pool side, the coffee shop or a cozy fire.  It would be wonderful for book clubs!
