Author and piano instructor Barbara Wing shares her forty years of teaching experience in her latest book, “Key Notes:  Creative Steps to Piano Success.”  “Nine out of ten piano students quit lessons by the end of their second year” – with these disturbing statistics, Wing sees it as absolutely imperative for teachers to not only teach their students but to spark interest and enthusiasm.  Her fresh approach to instruction is meant to keep students engrossed in the subject of piano studies for a much longer period of time.

With advice applicable to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students, Wing’s comprehensive book is well-written with a gentle, guiding tone.  She successfully conveys her ideas and techniques, which can be easily practiced during one-on-one or group lessons.  “Key Notes” also tackles teaching roadblocks, such as different learning styles and personalities, students that don’t practice, impatience, fear, and overdependence on the teacher.  Further, Wing tackles the timeless question, “why do I have to study the classics?”  Her answer not only gives students a connection to times past but she brings the composers to life.  She beautifully introduces the works of Brahms and Chopin, giving the student the opportunity to fall in love with the pieces they play.

Wing believes in a holistic approach to music studies versus just teaching a student to play notes on a keyboard.  Music theory, fundamentals of analysis and delving into the lives of the composers all bring the student to a more personal and emotional level with their music – thus making their ‘simple’ piano lessons much more fulfilling.  As one who has studied piano at a university’s conservatory of music, this reviewer can personally vouch for how painful it can be to trudge through hours of practicing a piece for which the student has no joy or love.  “Key Notes” has the ability to change this pain into a satisfying and blissful time of practicing a beautiful art.

“Key Notes” is the perfect addition to any piano teacher’s repertoire, whether they teach beginner, intermediate, or advanced students.  Inspiring, creative, and encouraging, Wing’s fresh perspectives on teaching piano instruction will keep students enthusiastic and interested in their lessons.  Bravo!
