Be Compassionate: Let the World Know that Jesus Cares
“Be Compassionate” is an expositional study of the first thirteen chapters of the Gospel of Luke found in the New Testament. Luke emphasizes Christ’s concern for hurting people. This is another in the familiar “Be Series,” individual commentaries based on each of the sixty-six books of the Old and twenty-seven books of the New Testament. Well known Bible teacher and author, Warren W. Wiersbe selects a specific character trait to be developed in the life and character of the Christian. He draws attention to how by taking an action verb such as “Be Compassionate” the reader can begin to incorporate these positive traits personally into their lives. Wiersbe’s commentaries use a devotional approach to exposition which can be adapted for personal study or for small group studies. The format includes thirteen chapters which also make them ideal for use in Adult Bible classes which often follow a series of three-month quarters in church educational programs. I was challenged by thought-provoking insight which provoked me to consider fresh insights into Jesus’ compassion often overlooked in these familiar New Testament passages. Stories Wiersbe used include: the account of John the Baptist’s and his confusion during imprisonment, the grief experienced by the widow after the loss of her son, the power of the Centurion’s faith in Jesus’ healing power, and the courage of the repentant woman at the banquet. “Be Compassionate” also is filled with information on the background and culture of New Testament life. This updated edition published by David C. Cook includes study guide material with questions for reflection or group discussion with each chapter. This guide is an excellent source for personal application and assimilation. The questions encourage the reader to examine and personalize the material brought to light through Wiersbe’s exposition of the passage. The material chosen cover lessons on faith, unbelief, prayer, salvation, God’s sovereignty, and Christ’s authority. Wiersbe’s writing style and practical applications bring the material in “Be Compassionate” to life and make it relevant for contemporary Christians actively pursing today’s fast-paced lifestyles. It contains inspiration and motivation for offering help and encouragement to hurting and needy people in “our world,” circle of family, friends, and sphere of influence. |
