“As Long as He Needs Me” by Mary Verdick is the fictional story of Kitty and Clem Johanssen. To celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary they take a cruise to Canada from New York. However, while Kitty relishes in the idea of having a “honeymoon” with Clem, he begins the trip in a sour mood after he is robbed. During the first dinner, Clem and Kitty meet a colorful cast of characters including snobby Kay, flirtatious Sebby, and awestruck young Jamie (intrigued by Kitty’s career). However, it is Toby who interests Kitty the most. Failing to come to terms with the robbery and other shortcomings in his life that torment him, Clem spends much of the cruise brooding while his wife enjoys the attention of both Sebby and Toby, though they have very different approaches to women. Throughout the current day story on the cruise, Kitty reflects on her relationship with Clem, including their first meeting, surprise wedding, difficult children relationships, and unfortunate indiscretions. The reader will discover in the end whether or not Kitty and Clem can weather not only the cruise, but also their relationship.
The overall plot in “As Long as He Needs Me” is easy to understand: Will Kitty and Clem’s relationship pass the test of time despite the obstacles that life has placed in their path, be it other people, illness, or job securities? The book is nicely edited and reads smoothly. There are many surprises! The part I found a bit lacking for my personal taste was in the area of character development. The characters were a bit clichéd. I never found myself rooting for anyone. I couldn’t tell what motivated Kitty as I was quite shocked by some of her decisions, yet I wanted to like her the most. I have never met people like her who have been willing to tell their life stories to complete strangers. It didn’t always seem natural to me. Also, some of the language was old fashioned, i.e.: “What do you think of them apples?” which was spoken by a 20-30 year old woman in regards to a life decision she made. Nonetheless, the analysis by the older couple of a lifetime of decisions they have made together and independently makes “As Long as He Needs Me” by Mary Verdick a worthwhile read. Couples that are lucky enough to make it together 35 years have a mountain of experiences that they have shared. It is impressive to realize what they have overcome, and you find yourself hoping they will stay together another 35 years!
