Kitty’s House of Horrors (Kitty Norville, Book 7)
“Kitty’s House of Horrors” is the seventh book in a series that features Kitty Norville, a radio talk show host who also happens to be a werewolf. In this episode, Kitty is offered the opportunity to educate the public about werewolves. She is to participate in a reality TV show along with other supernatural beings, including vampires and psychics. Also included will be one person who does not believe such beings exist; thus their mission is to enlighten him. Kitty agrees to partake in the project and heads out to a remote location in Montana. However, soon after the show begins, participants start getting killed and the housemates, many of whom have prior relationships, become suspicious of each other. They must quickly figure out the real reason they were assembled before it is too late. Even though this book is part of a series, it has little difficulty standing alone. It refers back to the story of how Kitty became a werewolf, which interested me enough to want to read the earlier books. There were a few references to a very old vampire which I am not sure if they were going back to previous books or perhaps were going to be found in a future story. I personally am not convinced of the existence of supernatural beings but I am open to the possibility. In this story Vaughn closely adheres with the popular lore regarding such beings, i.e., werewolves must be killed with a silver bullet and vampires die when a stake is driven through their heart. This work of fiction is appropriate for all adults. I was drawn to this book as a fan of reality TV but I was hooked by the author’s ability to create an intriguing mystery and allow it to slowly unravel. I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of development of many of the characters. Their names and their specialties in the supernatural world were given but beyond that they did little to add to the plot. I would have appreciated more information about them. This book is different from the kinds of stories I normally read, but I enjoyed it. The storyline is strong and the plot moves at a comfortable pace. “Kitty’s House of Horrors” by Carrie Vaughn is definitely worth reading. |
