“When its [body] internal environment becomes acidified, the body can fall ill in three different ways.” (p.16, 17) Vasey continues “The first is connection to the activity of enzymes...Enzymes can perform their task correctly only in an environment with a clearly defined pH; otherwise their activity can be disrupted or even cease completely....The second way the body becomes ill is due to the harsh, corrosive nature of acids present in excess amounts within the tissues....The third cause of suffering from excess acid is loss of minerals, since the body gives up alkaline minerals to neutralize acids.”  Too much acid in the system causes inflammation; skin issues such as eczema, hives, itching, and red patches; excessive sweat; low strength of white blood cells; and problems with the skeleton and teeth.

Acidosis is a huge problem in Western countries and is perpetuated by lack of vegetables in the diet and over consumption of tobacco, coffee, tea, and alcohol.  As well, stress is a huge culprit in creating an acidic environment in the body.

Vasey gives us concise information in lay terms.  In addition to information on understanding the importance of having a balanced pH level, he explains how to self-test with litmus paper (available over the counter) and interpreting the results.  As well, he lists symptoms that may be caused by the imbalance.

Once the reader understands the conditions, Vasey offers lists of acidic and alkaline foods.  He also suggests how to maintain a balanced diet with suggestions for meals.  American diet for breakfast is often white bread (or variation of, e.g. pastry, muffin, donut,) jam/jelly and coffee with milk and sugar.  This is highly acidic and sets the body in a downward motion immediately.  Add the stress of the day and you have created an environment that is conducive to illness.  Replacing breakfast with alkalizing foods such as fresh fruit, yoghurt, coffee substitute, almonds, or raw vegetables would not only satisfy the body with nutrients but create a pH balance.

“The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health” by Christopher Vasey is an important book to be read.  Designing our own diet to obtain and maintain a balanced body is the next step in having optimum health, something that most of us desire.  Let’s get rid of over-the-counter antacids and heal our body naturally!
