I Am My Own Dragon
The story starts off with Lucy moving from Beaumont, Texas to Austin, Texas in the early seventies to attend the University of Texas. Her experiences in the first section of the book, Life, depict the existence of the young woman searching for a deeper meaning of life through promiscuity and mood-altering substances. She eventually seeks out a local therapist, Joanna, that assists her in finding a part of herself she was searching for. In the meantime, the story follows the Transformation that also happens within Joanna during the counseling sessions with Lucy. In the end, Lucy finds peace inside herself and in a place of Enlightenment. On a personal note, I felt the first section was drawn out too much. There are just so much of sex scenes that I can take and after multiple encounters the plot gets old. The only reason I continued reading is because this was the only book I took with me on a trip. However, that said, I became more interested in the second part when Lucy and Joanna meet and transformation starts to become apparent. I’m grateful I “stuck to it” because the final section, Enlightenment, is a real gem. Linda Thompson’s craft of writing give us the opportunity to look within ourselves and parallel our lives to that of Lucy. Although written as a novel, “I Am My Own Dragon” could be anyone’s story. It shows how strength, courage, and willingness can heal a broken soul. |
