Barbara Techel is a self-published author that is known for her award-winning “Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog” book series.  She has been successful in placing her books in schools and libraries and now sharing with other authors the steps it takes to do the same.  First and foremost, which she explains in the Introduction “. . .[the] book must be of high quality, meaning it should be well-written, professionally edited and proofread, and produced to industry standards.”  As well, she says “. . . it helps to have the right tools at hand to help you easily promote and sell your book.  That’s where CLASS ACT comes in.”

One of the most important things, contrary to some beliefs and expert contradictions, self-published books can get into schools and libraries and Techel gives the reader the framework on how to do it. The first chapter begins with what to include in the presentation to the school or library.  Personally, she uses props and interactivity.  Techel is adamant the presentation must be top-notch.

Her second chapter includes finding speaking venues and the third chapter focuses on what to charge for your appearances.  Yes, charge.  Many authors feel they have to do their presentations for free or someone told them there is no budget for speakers.  This is not so in all school districts or private schools.

“Class Act” also contains organizational tools and business steps.  As well, Techel includes samples of her own sell sheets, promotional materials, outlines, and checklists.  I really don’t see anything missed; I believe every aspect as been covered.

In “Class Act,” Techel has given self-published, indie, or small press authors the tools to wager out and contact potential venues.  The tools are presented in a concise manner (112 pages) but have the impact of a volume of guidance.  If you are an author that has been reluctant about canvassing schools or libraries I encourage you to read this book; it will shine the light and guide you to successful presentations.
