Season of Sanematsu
Although I have not had the pleasure of reading other books in this series, this really is a story that one can read and catch on quickly to what is happening. There is so much history and documentation in this book of how Samurai dressed, acted and treated those they were joined to. Readers can certainly visualize the environment, personality and places where Samurai lords live. Adreyn Aquilla has been shipwrecked and rescued by Sanematsu Yoshihide. Many consider Adreyn to be a barbarian as she has her own thoughts about how she should be treated and how she expresses herself. She is not the demure lady all would want her to be. Regardless of what she is taught, she often jumps in with her own opinion. Yoshihide is captivated by her and her beauty and intelligence, but he knows if she doesn’t curb her outlandish behavior he will be accused of treason for taking her as his wife. He begins to change how he responds to others and lets his compassion show. Eventually he will have to answer for it. Right from the beginning this is a “can’t stop reading book.” The action begins at the beginning and readers will be rooting for Adreyn and Yoshihide to remain together. Their escapades are dangerous, lively and readers will enjoy them tremendously. The author’s research on characters, behaviors, customs and environment add great authenticity to this wonderful read, “Season of Sanematsu” by Kei Swanson.
