Carla Stewart looks into the souls of her characters and delivers such a beautiful story about love, loss, acceptance, and the power of choice.  “Broken Wings” captures the beauty of love in all forms.  I wanted to hold vigil beside Mitzi as she watched over her husband, Gabe.  I also wanted to listen to her story as she told it.

Mitzi and Brooke are very unlikely friends that might not have found each other had it not been for some very tragic events in Brooke’s life.  As Brooke realizes that her life isn’t what she thought it would be, Mitzi is right there offering her the means to spread her wings and fly.

Leaving an abusive relationship, Brooke tries to find the strength to face her life and make changes before it’s too late.  Meanwhile, Mitzi, an old jazz singer, is flooded with memories of her past and her struggles of moving forward from an early life of rough starts.  At the same time, Mitzi is trying to spark some sort of memories in Gabe as he fights a battle against Alzheimer's.

I enjoyed taking this journey through the eyes of both Brooke and Mitzi.

This book was a challenge to read at some points as the author really dug in deep to include the fear that these women had witnessed and the heartache they had to endure. Stewart did a fantastic job of turning that fear into fight and hope.

“Broken Wings” carries a strong message with it.  There are so many issues that are brought up that I feel like a little warning should be issued.  Handle with care.  With that being said, I would recommend this book to most of the women I know; my grandmother who sat beside my grandfather while he died with Alzheimer’s, my friend who hid an abusive relationship, all the way down to my mother whom I love dearly and just think she would enjoy the story.  I loved the empowerment that the characters of “Broken Wings” developed and believe women everywhere could take something from the story.

“Broken Wings” knows no age, race, color or time; it’s simply a magnificent story of love and friendship without labels.
