Imagine discovering a long lost book called, “The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln,” that tells of horrific events that happened during Lincoln’s life. Then picture yourself writing the history of Abraham Lincoln including both what has been known about him and the new information dreamed up from this secret journal.  That is what author Seth Grahame-Smith has done in writing “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.”

Beginning at a young age, with the death of his mother, Abe Lincoln suffered through some serious tragedies caused by the actions of vampires.  Gaining a strong hatred for them, he is coerced into becoming a vampire hunter. Strangely enough, the man who manipulated him into becoming a killer was actually a vampire himself.

As Lincoln grows into adulthood, he continues to be directed to hunt down and kill certain vampires.  He doesn’t understand why a vampire would want him to kill other vampires until much later on in his life.  Politics play a huge role with this.  Meanwhile, he finds his relationships with others affected by the involvement or interference of vampires in their lives.  He feels like his knowledge of the existence of vampires has doomed him to a life of secrecy, fear and unhappiness.  There are very few people who he that he can trust.

As his life progresses, so does his involvement in politics. Readers will be amazed at how many politicians were actually vampires or being controlled by vampires.  Well actually, most people probably wouldn’t find this amazing considering how politicians are viewed today!  Anyway, Lincoln’s motivation for freeing slaves extends beyond his dreams of human equality.  He realizes that he must end slavery to protect the future of all mankind.  How does this all play out?  You have to read “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” to find out…Seth Grahame-Smith has done a wonderful job tying the story of vampires into real historical events that took place during Lincoln’s life.  He definitely makes history much more interesting!
