Nora leads a good life.  She has friends, a job she doesn’t hate, and a boyfriend that cares about her.  Unfortunately, Nora lives a life of Meta-life; she tends to destroy the good things in her life by overanalyzing them, seconding-guessing everything she does.  In her mind Nora debates, argues, and criticizes everything she says and does.  Meta-life has taken over her existence.  Anxiety attacks plague her over mundane things, like opening a window.  She questions everything she does to the point of almost driving herself insane.

Dan is her boyfriend; her mother says he is perfect for her because he is on an even keel.  He seems to be able to “read” her and to keep her balanced.  Her Meta-life is causing her to question whether Dan is right for her.

After two years of working at an animal shelter, a job that seems perfect for her, Nora quits.  When a friend asks her to assist in writing an internet dating profile, Nora discovers she has a talent.  She decides to try her hand as an “Internet Dating Consultant.”  Nora is amazed that so many people are willing to pay someone to help write their profile.  At first things seem to be going well, but again she seems to be questioning herself.

Nora sits down with each customer and asks them pointed questions: age, height, weight, occupation, etc.  One of the questions is more subjective, “Five Things I Can’t Live Without.”  When Nora asks herself the same question, she begins to look deep within her and discovers who she really is.

Holly Shumas’ “Five Things I Can’t Live Without” is a charming book that women will enjoy.  Shumas’ humor will capture readers’ attention.  Nora is an eccentric person that many will relate too.  Her clients each have their own distinct voice.  Readers will enjoy this book and perhaps want to answer the key question themselves, “Five Things I Can’t Live Without.”  Ms. Shumas is very talented and sure to gain a large following.  I highly recommend “Five Things I Can’t Live Without” as a great summer read.
