“Advice from a Tree,” by Ilan Shamir, is about finding the answers to life's struggles through nature.  In the story an old wise Cottonwood tree "speaks" to us.  The tree uses itself as an example of endurance, wisdom and strength.  The tree does so by quoting simplistic phrases such as "go out on a limb" and "think long term".  The tree also advises us to take care of ourselves: "drink plenty of water" and to find contentment in our own selves: "be content with your own beauty".  The little bits of "advice", simplistic as they seem, should not be overlooked.  The tree encourages us to follow the example of nature, instead of finding answers elsewhere.

The book would be an ideal gift from a mentor, parent or grandparent. “Advice from a Tree” appeals to those of us who are too hurried and frazzled- to stop and appreciate the world around us.  It is the sort of wisdom handed down by someone who has been through harsh times and has come out of it a better person.  This book serves as a reminder of what is really important in life.
