There always seems to be an ongoing battle between the sexes when it comes to understanding the differences in communication styles and perception. “Gender Smart” presents in both an easy to comprehend and understand manner, the differences between men and women and how they view the world around them.
We learn from the first few minutes of "Gender Smart" how men and women have vastly different perceptions when it comes to simple communication styles. The author and presenter discuss how there are not only a psychological differences that makes for communication confusion but actual physical differences as well. One of the differences, according to the presenter, seems to be one of development of the two sexes throughout the ages. Men evolved to be strong, physically capable and somewhat quiet in their communication skills. Women on the other hand, were more nurturing and communication oriented. This difference shows itself early on within the sexes. The jobs of men were basically that of preserving the species and providing for them as well as protection. In these areas, men didn’t need a lot of verbal communication skills. Communication skills were not a necessary part of their lives and survival. The need for physical capability over road those of basic verbal communication for the male of the species.
Females on the other hand, developed to bear children, take care of the family and generally keep the family together using verbal communication and comforting skills as primary importance. Because of this, we see women as more nurturing in terms of their communications with their family and friends. This presents itself even today when we realize that women tend to talk things out with friends in order to cover all the bases and find solutions, while men are more physically apt to jump into a problem and take an active physical part when taking care of the situation at hand.
And so “Gender Smart” covers the subject of communication between the sexes and how both use it in their lives. And in doing so, this CD is informational, instructional and even entertaining in its view of communication between the sexes. In fact, I found "Gender Smart" to be one of the most eye-opening presentations on communication I have encountered in quite a while.
I would not only strongly suggest this as a wonderful informational tool for businesses when it comes to understanding more fully how the sexes differ in their communication styles, but I would also suggest “Gender Smart” to be used by both men and women for their personal lives as well. There is a lot of wisdom to be found within the 60 minutes of “Gender Smart” and it is definitely one in which the listener will learn more about communication and how it effects his/her life than ever before.
For anyone wanting to uncover some of the mysteries of communication differences between the sexes or someone wanting to better hone their personal communication skills, “Gender Smart” is an easy to understand, easily digestible lesson in the art of communication and how it applies to the sexes. Within the time it takes to watch your favorite T.V. show, listening to this CD will open the listeners mind to communication and after listening, will be on his/her way to becoming “Gender Smart” as well!
