For some people, pet dogs and cats are as beloved as their own offspring. For these passionate animal lovers, the personification of their pets underscores the relationship they enjoy with them. Jennifer Talbot Ross, dog “mother” and author, in that order, is one of those people.

The Moses in her book “The Story of Moses,” is a beautiful, big white Great Pyrenees, a dog breed often used for livestock guard dogs. Moses is one of several dogs who have been loved and loved in return over the years by the Ross family. This dog in particular was the favorite of family and friends, so the account of the unexpected passing of Moses as a result of cancer is especially heartfelt and poignant. Pax, a Great Pyrenees puppy that Ross likens to a big cotton ball, would eventually be taken in by the family, allowing Ross to become a nurturing dog mother all over again.

“The Story of Moses” is the first literary work by Jennifer Ross. But, the book seems to suggest that rather than becoming an author, her interest in writing stems primarily from her desire to share her passion for dogs with others. Not surprisingly, she has been a dog owner and lover all of her life and was raised in a family that bred and raised German Shepherd show dogs. The book is a pleasant read with a warm and fuzzy “Reader’s Digest” feel.

For those who share the author’s deep connections to dogs, “The Story of Moses” will most certainly be a satisfying book. But for those who do not, not so much.
