In “New Blossoms for Tomorrow” Ms. Richards looks at problems in our society today and relates them to how we have enslaved ourselves by them.  These problems include those in our homes, relationships, with our children, our health and materialism.  She equates each to a form of slavery.  While she relates most of these issues to how they affect the Black culture today, I felt that much of the issues that she writes about carry over to every culture.  This especially includes our need for materialism.  By turning our lives away from materialism, we in turn become more spiritual and closer to God.

I found her viewpoints to be right on target.  Much of what she said is already known, however, she phrased certain things in a way that made them stand out.  This includes, “Unstable homes do make unstable children.”  This is so true.  In addition to pointing out the bad things, she discusses ways in which they can be overcome.  I really felt that she offers a great deal of depth and compassion that most people will really relate to.  However, the book also contains a great deal of grammatical errors.  I felt that these errors detracted from the writings.  With better editing, this book would have a much higher score.

I recommend “New Blossoms for Tomorrow” by Althea C. Richards for African-Americans and others who would like to improve their lives.  I think that this book would make an excellent choice for either a cultural counseling class or a Black studies class.
