I recently read “Mirror Ball” by Matt Redman and was pleasantly surprised.  There have been few books by musicians that I have read that have seemed worthwhile, but I decided to give this one a try because of the basic theme: how we can reflect God’s glory.

It’s strange, but sometimes it seems like recently it has been difficult to find books that are ultimately about God and how we can honor Him.  There seem to be a lot of books that tell us how to get things from God or make our churches bigger or deepen our personal relationship with Him.  While these things aren’t necessarily bad, it just seems like there is a lack of books that truly point to God and tell us that He’s really what our lives are all about.  That in itself was refreshing.

While I can’t say that Matt Redman’s writing is exactly legendary, it is passable.  It’s not difficult to read, it’s just not great.  However, it’s the content that I enjoyed.  The basic concept stems from how a small mirror ball, when reflecting the right light and shine brightly.  There is a nice quote that says, “If I wake up one day and cannot think of a reason to bring praise to God, then something is wrong with my spiritual outlook.”  Great stuff.  Not super deep and awe-inspiring, just basic truth.

Other topics in the book include: if God is so big, why aren’t we living more faith-filled lives? and the fact that we really aren’t all that significant (in light of the expansive universe and God’s greatness), and the names of God. 

Again, this is not deep, earth-shattering theology or brilliant writing.  It is, however, a nice change of pace from the Christian self-help books that are becoming all too popular.  This is a highly recommended read for those who feel like they need a reminder of their purpose, or for those who seem to find emptiness in a lot of the new theology that is floating around today.
