I recently received a copy of “God Knows My Name: Never Forgotten, Forever Loved” by Beth Redman.  This book is written as an encouragement to those people (especially women, but more on that later) who sometimes feel like God has forgotten them or that God doesn’t care.  It’s an inspiring book of true-life stories from Redman mixed with essential biblical truths.

I didn’t realize until I actually received the book and saw the cover that this was, in fact, a book for women.  Not being a woman (that I know of, anyway), I decided to not only read it myself, but give it to my wife to read also to gain a broader perspective of the success of Redman’s writing.  However, just because the book is pointed at women, doesn’t mean us guys can’t collect a little wisdom and perspective from the book also.  In fact, I actually (secretly), enjoyed this book and found it beneficial to men and women.

The biggest asset to this book was the stories.  Redman is a great storyteller and provided some heart-wrenching glimpses into her past as well as some humorous anecdotes that most anyone can relate to.  While I found it difficult to read some of the stories about her father and the birth of her child, my wife was brought to the point of tears through some of them.  Moments later, though, in reading a story about a “spin class,” both of us could be found laughing out loud.  It really is an emotional book.

The drawback that I found to the book was the depth of the message.  The basic message is stated in the title and, really, one probably wouldn’t need to read the rest of the book if they could grasp that one concept.  The book is enjoyable and makes the point memorable and applicable, but it does not really add to that one basic point.  God loves you even though He knows your past and even though you still mess up, and He wants to help you to be all that He created you to be.  Those are great points, but not new or real deep.

Overall, I thought “God Knows My Name: Never Forgotten, Forever Loved” was a good book that provided some nice insight and inspiration.  What it lacked in depth, it more than made up for in character and charm.  While I wouldn’t recommend this book to most guys out there, I think this is a great book for the women in your life, especially if they struggle in any way with feeling loved or wanted.
