Twisted Webs
For the gorgeous Ashleigh Taylor every parent’s worst nightmare became a reality just days after having given birth to twin daughters. One of them, Cassie, was kidnapped from the hospital and a doll left in her place. Ashleigh and her husband, Conrad, waited in vain for a ransom demand. None ever came. Ashleigh kept believing that Cassie was safe somewhere, and at the same time tried her absolute best not to make Callie, the other twin, feel less wanted and loved in any way. Due to an interesting twist in the usual mystery and suspense writing the reader knows from the very start who took Cassie, and why. Therefore one would find it much easier to concentrate on the fascinating subplots that abound in the book, not having to overly worry about Cassie’s fate. Practically every character in the book is somehow tied to the retail industry, and tales of greed, deceit, lies, power struggles and behind-the-scenes happenings in that very demanding world make for totally fascinating reading. I was lucky enough to take Darlene Quinn’s “Twisted Webs” on a recent vacation, since the book proved to be near-perfect vacation reading. Ms. Quinn’s writing is very engaging, and the story drew me in quickly and held my attention throughout. Most of the chapters are short, some only a couple of pages, which was very convenient for a vacation, where one often wants to read just a couple of pages before taking another nap or venturing out on another adventure. The characters were well drawn, if at moments just a bit too positive as well as overly and consistently forgiving for my taste. Overall I enjoyed “Twisted Webs” a great deal, and after finding out that it was actually a sequel, I am curious enough about the first book in the series to look for it. And that says a lot. I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy smooth writing, engaging stories set in the glittery background of retail and fashion, and a hefty dose of intrigue, romance and suspense. They will decidedly not be disappointed. |
