Davina Montgomery has lived her entire life at St. Christopher’s Abbey in the care of nuns and surrounded by English guards sworn to protect her.  As the first born and heir to three kingdoms in England, Davina grew up knowing that she will always have enemies conspiring  to kill her before she can claim the throne.  The Abbey has been her only safe haven until a betrayal leaves the Abbey vulnerable and under attack.  On his way to England, Robert MacGregor, first born and heir to his laird, along with members of his Scottish clan, see the Abbey on fire and soldiers fighting.  Although he had no intention of getting involved with the fight, he comes across Captain Edward Asher, Davina’s most trusted soldier.  In a dying plea, Asher begs Robert to save Davina from her imminent death.  Robert knows nothing about Davina’s true identity but honorably rescues her from the Abbey and takes her back to his home on the Isle of Skye.  Once there, Davina feels the kind of love and security with Robert that she has never had.  Staying with Robert, Davina knows, could bring about the destruction of his clan, yet she cannot turn away from the love she feels for him.  Can she possibly live with Robert and go unnoticed or will staying there force Robert’s clan into battle?  Although Robert too, wants nothing more than to be with Davina, he too must decide between Davina and the loyalty and honor of his clan.

In true highlander spirit, “Ravished by a Highlander” has everything you could want from a late seventeenth-century Scottish romance novel.  There is love, betrayal, action, sex and even humor.  I enjoyed the blend of certain historical facts of this particular time period. It was very instrumental to the story and made this book even more interesting to read.  I must say though, I didn’t care too much for the speech tags, but this is just a preference and didn’t take away from me enjoying the book.  Paula Quinn made the characters so likeable that I found myself creating a visual in my mind of exactly what they all looked like.  This is the first installment of the “Children of the Mist” series and I look forward to the second installment coming out later this year.
