Lena Phoenix writes this novel from experiences and knowledge gained through her involvement with various alternative spiritual groups. Further, she brings forth knowledge gained while studying at Naropa University in the Inter-Arts Program. She lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband and their two cats.

For anyone young or old who had ever wondered what a cult might be like, this book offers a glimpse into a society where it’s members are encouraged to leave behind their lifestyles and homes to dedicate themselves to the group. Under the guise of God and one’s personal healing, Ms. Phoenix explains in very conscious and easy to understand verbiage how adults and children can be caught up into the world of a cult gradually and gently.

When Michelle Thompson loses her job as a web designer suddenly and unexpectedly, her future looks uncertain. Lucy, her beautiful friend who makes her career as a dancer, persuades Michelle to attend a lecture by a spiritual leader her followers know lovingly as Ma. After once again arguing with her father and being disappointed by her brother, she decides to begin a new life in a distant city and discover herself with the aid of Ma.

Finding no work in the new city, Michelle is convinced by members of Ma’s group to donate her expertise in building a web site to expand their message. Months later, very heavily in debt and having alienated her best friend Lucy over a man, she discovers the truth of Ma’s intent and mission.

Fortunately, these friends reunite and make amends. Having lost so much and feeling defeated, they find that their friendship is strong enough to continue. Michelle ends this chapter of her life with the healing and love of a fellow cult member who leaves the group to reclaim his love for her. What appeared to be a life of tragedy turns to happiness and hope for the future after Michelle leaves the group and its self-fulfilling goals.

Many ponder how anyone would wish to become a member of a cult. By reading “The Heart of a Cult,” you will understand that one doesn’t have to be brainwashed, held captive and weak to do so. Virtuous characteristics are promised to those who are led on this mission under the assumption of personal belonging and healing from life’s painful hurts and issues. You will discover how easy it is to become convinced that a cult’s goals are admirable and honorable.
