James Patterson has always been one of my favorite authors.  His Alex Cross series is excellent, especially “Kiss the Spider.”  His fans will be thrilled to know that he and his co-author Michael Ledwidge do not disappoint with “The Quickie.”  It is chock full of suspense and surprises and I did not want to put it down once I started to read it.

There are so many twists and turns in this novel that I really cannot write much about the plot without giving any of it away.  The main character, Lauren Stillwell, believed that she was living the American Dream with the perfect marriage.  It was not until she decided to surprise her husband for lunch that she saw him go into a hotel with a young blonde woman.  Deciding that she wanted to get even, she takes up with coworker Scott Thayer and decides to have a no-strings-attached quickie.  Something awful happens during her brief interlude that will ruin a lot of lives and put her career, marriage and everything she has worked so hard for in danger.  Trying to make things right, she is forced to keep secrets that put her job in serious jeopardy.  She also begins to realize that she knows nothing about the man she is married to and the man that she had a brief interlude with.

Just when you think you know what is going to happen next, this book throws in unexpected twists and turns that will keep you turning pages right until the end, and even that is shocking.  As Lauren uncovers more and more information about the people she thought she knew and trusted, she realizes that her life will never go back to the way it was.  She must do what she can to save herself.

James Patterson fans and mystery thriller fans will definitely enjoy this story.  It has the quality of the Alex Cross series with even more twists and turns.  I would highly recommend “The Quickie” to anyone looking for a great summer read.
