Creating memories for children is one of the top priorities as a parent and what better way than to have cooking events with them. I’m going to take this one step further and say that memories of cooking with a grandparent are equally important.  “Cooking Together” is one way of doing this.

The recipes are simple. For example, “Cream Cheese Turkey Bagel”- there’s nothing exotic about this recipe; just cream cheese, bagel and a slice of deli turkey.  But, it’s not about the ingredients; it’s about reading the recipe together and creating the end result.  As well, it’s educational.  The child learns to measure the cream cheese and how to spread it on the bagel.

The more “complicated” recipe would be “Meat Loaf Wedges.”  Although simple, it involves measuring, combining, shaping and using the microwave.

Older children would be challenged with recipes like “Chicken and Stuffing Casserole” or “Scalloped Potatoes.”  They involve more ingredients, melting, chopping, dicing and shredding. As well, an oven has to be used.

Perusing the recipes I found that most ingredients can be found in the household pantry and at a nearby grocery store. They are simple and take very little time to put together. The most important thing is to give your child tasks they can accomplish while learning kitchen safety and new skills.  I have no doubt that new memories will be created in the kitchen with “Cooking Together.”
