Be Transformed: New Life Awaits
In “Be Transformed” John Robin Murphy shares his testimony to demonstrate for the reader the restorative work of God in his life. This is John’s story of his personal journey from atheism to Christianity and of his discovery of the secret to a transformed life. John incorporates principles to help the reader discover a pattern for radical life change and transformation. Murphy’s quest for wholeness is clearly articulated. In his writing John allows himself to be transparent and vulnerable. Fighting obesity since childhood, hostile toward Christianity, and binging on alcohol, John recognized his emptiness. At age 26 John turned to the truth of God and gave his life to Christ. John’s conversion changed many of his behavior patterns, but did not immediately solve all his problems. Depression and over-eating continued to be a struggle. A study of the Biblical viewpoint of transformation led Murphy to a realization that a heart change is needed. He labels it a “rewire” of his heart. This book is the result of discoveries made while counseling in a program for substance abusers. Murphy helped others gain freedom from the bonds of their addictions. The book is a reminder that a life of transformation is God’s call to all Christians. I found the book personally challenging. I plan to take the next “incremental” steps to “jumpstart” a transformation following the action plan John has suggested. He has also provided a practical pattern of prayers for commitment, guidance, forgiveness, repentance, humility, and love for God. The supporting scriptural references at the end of the chapters become a helpful study tool and provide opportunity for further personal review and the potential for study questions for group discussion. This work will be of immense value to any Christian desirous of overcoming self-destructive behavior, and to those who want to emulate Christ through a transformed life. “Be Transformed” can also be an incredible guide for anyone serving others through a counseling or pastoral ministry. |
