Sufi Rapper: The Spiritual Journey of Abd al Malik
Born as Regis Fayette-Mikano, but assumed the name Abd al Malik when he took on Islam as his faith, he soon learned the dark side of this religion. Questioning the motives, beliefs, and traditions, Malik didn’t seem to fit into the fundamental teachings. Musically inclined and wanting to fulfill his desires, Malik's search led him to a Moroccan Sufi Master, Sidi Hamza al-Qadiri al-Butchichi. Sufi beliefs resonated with Malik. Finding his own inner talent, Malik formed the New African Poets, a rap group, in 1990. Since then, he has released three solo recordings which garnered awards in the industry. Malik had two options; one to stay in the ghettos and follow the typical life of drugs and violence, or to take his own life in his own hands and create a life that is fulfilled. He chose the latter and is on a spiritual path like none other. I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Sufi Rapper” and felt very connected to Malik’s journey. The well-written account of his feelings and experience brings the reader into the life of a seeker. I’m inspired to read of a young man’s journey, one who chose a path to enlightenment rather than prison, not only on a physical level but a prison of the soul. Touching, poignant, and inspirational. |
