Silent Lies
At first Leo Hoffman seems to be an ordinary boy. Coming from a poor family, his life is focused mostly on work and trying to survive. However, everything changes when a teacher comes to his town and discovers Leo’s great talent for languages. Thanks to his efforts Leo moves to Budapest where he can continue his education and develop his talent. In the meantime, World War I breaks out and Leo has to struggle again to survive. He finds a job at a local hotel but soon gets involved with the wrong people and finds himself on his way to Shanghai to start a new life with the woman he loves. Silent Lies takes you back in history and lets you discover various corners of the world and different cultures. Leo’s character was carefully drawn and quite likable, despite some wrong choices he had made. M.L. Malcolm’s book is very descriptive and gives a lot of information about the history and culture in the early 1920s. As a historic fiction fan it was a real treat. |
