“Too Precious for Earth” by Amy C. Maddocks is a true story by the author.  Unable to conceive for sixteen years (and thinking that she could not), the author conceives what she and her husband consider to be a miracle baby.  Having delivered her first child very early, she is put under the care of a specialist.  Severe pain finally leads to a diagnosis of preeclampsia.  Much too early Mrs. Maddocks is flown to a hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit where she is prepped for emergency surgery to deliver her son.  Weighing only a bit above a pound, Connor struggles to stay alive for several days, and even seems to defy the odds at times.  Yet, sadly he passes away too soon leaving his family in extreme turmoil and grief.

Mrs. Maddocks shares her experiences from great joy at the news of her pregnancy to unbearable shock and pain at Connor’s loss.  She writes clearly and truthfully, never holding back from describing the fallout from her loss.  She shares of everything from marital problems to her self-described occasional obsession with remembering her son.

“Too Precious for Earth” is not an easy read.  However, I imagine most that will read this story do so out of a desire to connect with others who have shared similar experiences.  Mrs. Maddocks has sought to find a purpose for Connor’s short life.  In so doing, she and her family have grown stronger giving of their time for many volunteer purposes to make the world a better place.  She believes that this desire to help others comes from her experiences with the loss of her son.  Mrs. Maddocks will continue to help others through the story of Connor’s life. “Too Precious for Earth” is a supportive read for those in the midst of their grief from the loss of a child, for she provides hope that happier days will come again even when things look so very bleak.  May others find comfort in the beautiful and honest words of Amy Maddocks.
