400 Best Sandwich Recipes: From Classics & Burgers to Wraps & Condiments
Filling between two pieces of bread, stuffed into a pocket, or inside a rolled flat product, has been done in many different cultures for centuries; they can be as basic as a slice of meat or as loaded as the old “Dagwood Sandwich.” (Am I dating myself?!) The options Alison Lewis has given us in “400 Best Sandwich Recipes” are plenty and I was excited to try some of them. For the purpose of the review, we have to test three recipes. For the first test I made “Brie-Mushroom Burgers.” The recipe is standard - ground beef, onion, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper. Top this with melted Brie, sautéed mushrooms and onions, and you have yourself a burger that is simple to make, very tasty and will please the palette. The recipe didn’t call for salt as I suppose the tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce was the replacement. I felt it wasn’t enough and had to sprinkle salt on my burger. The second recipe I tested was the “Salmon BLT Sandwich.” The ingredients were the usual: bun, lettuce, bacon, and tomato. However, the addition was dilled mayo and grilled salmon filet. It was great! I've never thought of having a BLT with salmon. I like the addition of dill to the mayo. This was a definite hit in our home and filling enough for a dinner meal. I’m a fan of Greek food so I tested “Greek Chicken Salad Pita with Lemon Vinaigrette.” Yummmm! The fresh-squeezed lemon vinaigrette was wonderful. It had just enough garlic to add the zing yet wasn’t overbearing. Add the usual Greek fare of chicken, red and green bell pepper, kalamata olives, red onion, and parsley and then stuff the pitas, lined with a lettuce leaf until they bulge. Top that with sliced tomatoes and you have a wonderful lunch. Good combination. There are so many more recipes I’ll be making. Looking through the rest of the book, I see a lot of combinations I’ve never even considered. The variety that Alison Lewis gives is: Breakfast, Appetizers, Lunch Box, Classics, Grilled Cheese, Burgers, Wraps, International, Regional, and Light and Healthy. She also added Condiments and Desserts. Yes! Dessert sandwiches. Do I recommend this book? Yes, I sure do; not only for family cooking but for any restaurant or sandwich stand. As far as I’m concerned “400 Best Sandwich Recipes” is a keeper. |
