The Genius of the Metropolis: Spiritual Economics and General Philosophy
First let me say that this is one of the longest books on poetry I have read in a while. It is a whopping 629 pages of thoughts and poetry. I do think the author has some great thoughts that will make readers look at the world around them and at how they feel. Ronnie Lee looks at money, government, and spirituality which many of us probably do as well. I for one tend to look at those who are less unfortunate than we are, but the author does show how we, as a nation, keep those people “in their place.” As Lee has stated in his prose, we need to get back to the basics. There is no outline of his prose as in chapters, he just jumps in. I didn’t like that. I would rather read what he is proposing and then choose the chapters I wanted to read. His prose on happiness was very good. We are all trying to please others and when do we get to pleasing ourselves? If we don’t love ourselves, how does that impact the environment we live in? I was also interested in Lee's views on morality and truth- are we all that bad that we only seek what we want and don’t care for others or how we get there? Does power give us what we want? Are we all out for power? I for one, as a Psychologist, don’t believe in power; you allow yourself to be led by people and the government. What happened to our own thoughts and values? However, I do agree with Lee that there is nothing in life that is free- personally, spiritually or through business. This was an overwhelming book to get through- I read it slowly and made comments on my own thoughts about the author’s views. It is not a book you can read quickly. Frankly, I would have preferred different volumes on the author’s beliefs. Author Ronnie Lee has opinions and “the Genius of Metropolis” gives readers food for thought, but I think as individuals we have to exam our own lives and where we want to be. I do think this book could have been broken down; I know at the end of reading this I questioned “can you tell me how I really feel?” |
