Many years ago the joint effort of the Humans and Aanians drove the evil Jyniae from their land and imprisoned them in the harsh, rugged terrain of the north.  Half-human and half-Jyniae, Jhonia is able to tap into the great magic of his people, he serves as a mage to the King.  Alyx is half-human and Rydi.  The Rydi do not fear death, in fact they embrace it.  From birth, the Rydi were taught to be fearless warriors and to fight only to the death.

After nine-hundred years the Jyniae plan to fight for the return of their lands.  They await the return of Logan, an evil mage.  Many years ago when Logan knew he could not win the war, he built a crystal tower and filled it with his power and soul.  The two fearless men travel their world to prevent a devastating war.  Jhonia’s daughter is the key to stopping the evil plot. Logan’s followers try to stop the brave, determined group. They face assassins and betrayal from friends along the way. 

Joe Lawson’s first book will amaze science fiction fans.  “The Calm Before the Storm” has all the elements that you would expect in a fantasy/science fiction book, swords, magic, battles and romance.  However, this is not your typical run-of-the-mill plot.  Lawson has created his own world; he is very descriptive and lays a good foundation for this series.  The plot moves quickly, keeping the reader on the edge of his or her seat.  The characters are well-developed and never get lost in the background.  The cover is delightfully done and hints at the magic inside.  Science fiction fans will love “The Calm Before the Storm.”
