Overpopulation of the earth is a huge problem, resulting in a depletion of natural resources, overcrowding, and pollution.  But what can be done about it without major bloodshed such as war?  Professor Kirby Wadsworth comes up with an idea.  Instead of eliminating the current population, why not prevent future generations from ever being born?  He teams up with the Chinese to work on such a solution.  Together, they develop a drug to destroy women’s ovaries without the women knowing what is happening.  As the birth rate in the United States drops drastically, the government must figure out the cause and act quickly to prevent an economic depression.

“The Ovary Wars” is Mike Hogan’s first book and it is awesome.  The plot is incredible and really made me think about all the dangerous possibilities that are inevitable due to the degree of technology that is available and the radical views of individuals and groups.  It was disturbing to watch people justify their actions as being for the good of humanity but knowing they are acting for selfish reasons.  It was interesting to see how people are willing to compromise their ethics in order to obtain power.

Every character in the book had a specific motivation for his or her actions and the author allowed the reader to clearly see them.  For the scientific community it was population control, terrorism or world dominance.  For the general population there were a diverse number of reasons.  The FBI agents who investigated were too involved in this case - one had become infertile due to the drug and the other was looking for a huge promotion for solving a big case.  The Rosenbloom family, headed by an OB doctor, lost its status as their income declined and led them to make some very difficult choices about their future.  It was enlightening to see how human nature seems to trump common sense when people are faced with stressful situations.

“The Ovary Wars” is an incredible book written for an adult audience.  I loved the end which showed how the United States turned the tables on China for their role in the incident.  This is an excellent story that will leave the reader wondering about other situations happening in the world that have not yet been uncovered.
