Livestock Inspector Bill Gastner feels himself being pulled back into the law enforcement world from which he is retired when a mysterious death occurs. Initially, the death does not appear suspicious, but the more Bill learns, the more doubts he has. He feels drawn to investigate. At the same time this is happening, a young cowpuncher also disappears with his boss’s truck and livestock trailer. Because he left, his working dog/best friend behind, Bill knows that there is more to the story.
As Bill begins investigating both mysteries, he learns that not everyone is quite what they seem. He also learns that when people appear in a small town, they definitely should not be trusted. Bill is definitely getting an education in regards to both of these cases. Bill gets to sharpen his old investigative skills and really seems to enjoy doing something other than inspecting livestock.
“Red, Green, or Murder” by Steven F. Havill makes for a fun read. The author put enough twists in the story to keep me on my toes. I enjoyed the unique ideas that he incorporated into this story. To explain what I mean would be to give it away, so I won’t. I also liked that this story takes place in a small town in New Mexico. It is nice to step into a world that is different from my own. The small-town feel that is incorporated into the story also made me feel like I knew the characters and were a part of the story. This is definitely a mystery that will be enjoyed by all!
