“Spanish Lullaby” will immediately draw you in. The story begins two years after Marsia Peterson tragically lost her husband and her daughter. She is still grieving, but her financial situation dictates that she begins working or loses her home. Her best friend Mona is rather self-absorbed, except when it comes to Marsia. She helps her find a job and she gets her made over and dressing well. Marsia is really a beautiful woman.

Mona has her own issues. She is in a loveless marriage in which her financial needs are met, but she has to go elsewhere for her physical needs. Mona feels trapped, but does not know how to escape. Helping Marsia gives her something positive to do.

Marsia also has an evil ex-mother-in-law. Sidney hates Marsia for not dying instead of her son. She does everything in her power to make Marsia’s life hell. Marsia has no idea how far Sidney is willing to go to hurt her.

When Marsia meets sculptor and teacher, Max Fuentes, she falls hard for him. Max falls for her as well. Information that Marsia is given makes it very difficult for her to trust him. She has to decide whether or not to go with what she is hearing or to go with her heart. This is not an easy path for her.

I loved this story. My heart went out to Marsia. She has been through hell and is trying to dig herself out of a well of misery. When her efforts to change her life are being stunted by her mother-in-law, she gets caught up on an emotional roller coaster. Her determination and her friendship with Mona help pull her through.

“Spanish Lullaby” is a beautiful tale about surviving loss and betrayal. It is definitely a must read and would be perfect for women’s reader groups. It would also be a great gift for a woman who enjoys a romance with depth.
