Phryne Fisher and her maid and companion Dot are on the train to Ballarat. They are going to visit Phryne's relatives, however, they never get there. Phryne had been dozing when she smelled chloroform. She broke out the window in her compartment and proceeded to see about the other passengers. She went from compartment to compartment opening windows to get the awful smell out. In the last compartment however, she finds Eunice Henderson with her face burned and no sign of her mother.  They get Eunice off the train and into fresh air as they did with all the passengers.

The story is very well written and the characters are so life like that you feel you are part of the story itself. Once you start reading the book you have to keep on to see what will happen. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a good mystery.  Phryne's adventures are pieced together with small clues that all add up in the end.
