QX lives with her family in the grey world of Gloomgus Gulch.  Colors and dreams are forbidden here.  Life is so dull.  QX begins having dreams of something more.  Her dreams are actually being directed by a higher source named Travors.  Travors is the son of Audion of Akashan whose job is to keep records of each person’s past and present lives in a library.  Travors has been studying under the dream traveler, Master Zoom.  Travors has been given the assignment of helping QX.  He appears to her in her dreams and begins showing her what her world could really be like.

As QX begins discovering colors in her dreams, she also begins to gain color.  The more QX discovers how special she is, the more color she gains.  She tries to cover it up.  This does not go over well with the ruler Gorgon, who wants everyone to be dull.  QX is tracked by Guerillas, and when they discover that she is changing color, they go after her.   As QX learns who she is, she transcends to a different place.  Now she can be a dream runner.

I loved this short story.  It is only 37 pages long.  It is written in a format that can be easily converted to a stage script for a children’s play.  The story teaches youth that it is okay to be different as they discover who they are.  Sometimes different is even better.  The story takes the main character beyond the world of mundane and teaches her to look below the surface of her reality to discover that there is more out there.  It is really hard for young people to do this.  So many get caught up in trying to be like everyone else so that they are not picked on.  QX couldn’t live like that and she had to change to evolve into something better.  It wasn’t easy, but her life will be so much better.  I think that adults will enjoy “QX and the Dream Runner” as well.  I did.  It also reminded me that there is more out there for me, I need to recognize what it is and reach for it.
