Losing his wife and unborn child at the hands of a deranged rapist/murderer, Devin finds himself unable to control his rage. Deciding to take matters into his own hands results in Devin being transported to a different reality in the afterlife where he finds himself drawn into a battle between demons, fundamentalists and angels. Each wants to own Devin because they know that through his actions, he has the power to influence that future state of heaven.
Being a good man at heart, initially Devin is somewhat gullible and finds himself wanting to trust those who make promises of reuniting him with his wife and child, as long as he does what they say. Devin quickly discovers that the majority of people who are trying to control him do not have his best interests at heart at all. He has to decide who he can trust, and accept the painful consequences of the actions that he took while he was still in human form on earth. Knowing that he cannot go back and change the past forces Devin to accept the reality of what he did. Realizing that he can play a role in keeping heaven a beautiful place empowers Devin to try to do the right thing. A huge part of this involves saving the soul of a teenage girl who holds the key to everything.
Even though Devin had assumed a supernatural form, his character was totally realistic, and I found myself completely being able to relate to how he could have gotten himself into such a mess. Nadine, the teenage girl, also acted in a very realistic manner. Her life was in disarray because of circumstances that occurred that were out of control. The angels needed Devin’s intervention in helping to save her, to save heaven. To have this kind of responsibility placed upon a man who was still trying to figure out what was happening, and overcome his own grief, was pretty overwhelming.
“The Logic of Demons” is a phenomenally written story. The first word that came to my mind when I finished reading it was “WOW!” The plot takes many twists and turns that helped keep my mind totally caught up in the story. In reality, we live in a world where we have to be careful about who we can trust. Basically, I try to always hope for the best. “Logic of Demons” takes things to the extreme, into the supernatural realm where you must know who you can trust because the consequences of being deluded into false actions can have a profound effect on a person’s life through eternity. This book is definitely a must read!
