I’m a full-fledged advocate of natural and organic products so you can just imagine how thrilled I was to get my hands on “Green Beauty Recipes.”  My weekend consisted of creating products to use.  I treated this book as we do cookbooks; trying at least three recipes.

The first recipe I tried was “Nourishing Hand Mask with Honey.”  Combining salt, honey, egg yolk and cream made a wonderful softening product.  The fifteen minutes I had to spend with plastic gloves on gave me the opportunity to peruse other recipes.

The second recipe I tried was “Lemon and Yogurt Exfoliating Mask.”  The mask was smooth and easy to put on. The option was to use either aloe vera juice or honey.  I choose honey which created a thick base. I would image aloe vera juice would make it more runny.  I liked the feel of my skin after rinsing.

The third recipe I tried was “Green Skin Food.”  I liked the combination of rosemary and neroili essential oils because it gave a fresh scent that is pleasing to me.  I found this concoction didn’t solidify as I would have liked but this may be due to the warm room temperature.  However, the skin does feel moisturized and nourished.  This is certainly one product I will make again.

Julie Gabriel provides recipes for Cleaners, Toners, Moisturizers, Mask & Scrubs, Sun Care, Body Care, Hair Care and Bath Treatments.  She also has a chapter title “Handmade Beauty Basics” where she gives essential information on making the products, working with essential oils, and what green beauty really means. There are no stones unturned; Gabriel covers everything one would need to know.

“Green Beauty Recipes” is a timely book since many of us are “going green.”  We no longer want to use harmful chemicals or accept using animals for testing products.  Using products that can be found in our own home, with the addition of essential oils or natural preservatives, will not only nourish our body, but help keep our planet clean.  I commend Julie Gabriel on making this book available to us and I encourage everyone to consider having “Green Beauty.”
