The desire to “write a book” has long been part of the American culture at virtually every socio-economic level. Never has the realization of that desire been more attainable than at this point in time; as a result of the digitalization of the traditional publishing process, it is now possible for everyman to be a published writer. But, while it’s easier to “be published,” it’s no easy task. Much about publishing has changed, much for the better, but the core components of the process must still be managed and that is the value of Joel Friedlander’s book, “A Self Publisher’s Companion.”

Friedlander holds credentials, and possesses experience, in both the traditional publishing arena and the new digital playing field. He uses his wellspring of knowledge and wisdom to compile a thorough and balanced presentation of the options available currently to both aspiring, as well as modestly experienced writers. And, he offers important instruction to aid them in publishing sustainably by getting the specialized help they need and staying current with the rapid changes in electronic marketing.

Throughout the book, Friedlander offers candid cautions, based upon his own mistakes, and those of the writers he has helped through his own book design consultancy. As a result, the reader becomes well-grounded with regard to the realities of self-publishing. For example, he writes, “It’s no wonder that self-publishers are exhausted. Worse, for a novice the sheer mass of information, tips, guidelines, books, websites, blogs, free downloads, ecourses, and expert advice… are enough to make you swoon from information overload…”

Mindful of the potential for “paralysis by analysis,” “A Self Publisher’s Companion” is a carefully crafted, orderly dissemination of what a writer, particularly of non-fiction, needs to be focused on. The book is divided into six sections:  A Self-Publishing Orientation; Bookmaking; Social Media for Authors; The Ebook Revolution; The Electronic Life; and, You Are the Market. A lengthy list of notable resources follows. Each section weaves together some of the best writing from the authors widely followed blog posts and articles. The collective impact of this plethora of information makes this book a valuable companion indeed.

I have self-published two children’s books, and I found myself lamenting, as I read “A Self Publisher’s Companion,” that I had not had the benefit of Joel Friedlander’s wit, wisdom and direction during the process. Henceforth, this book will remain a “Top Shelf” selection in my library and I fully expect that it will inspire me to create future books using Friedlander’s model as my guide.
