In the foreword Lawrence Wilson, M.D. writes “Nutritional balancing helps restore the body’s vitality and energy-producing capacity by gently but powerfully balancing body chemistry, rather than through the use of many remedies.”  Rather than dealing with the symptoms, nutritional balancing incorporates biochemistry, nutrition, stress theory, pathology, psychology, and ancient wisdom such as acupuncture.  As well, applications of hair tissue mineral analysis, diet, supplementary nutrients, detoxification, and lifestyle changes restore the body to balance.

Understanding the concept and how the body functions is of ultimate importance and Joy Feldman’s “Joyful Cooking in the Pursuit of Good Health” is a good place to start.  Aside from giving concise information to take a healthier path, she gives menu plans. She also addresses expectant mothers and children and ways to maintaining nutritional balancing.

Sometimes starting a new eating plan could be overwhelming but Feldman eliminates anxiety by providing simple recipes.  I decided to test some of the recipes with the first being “Delightful Oatmeal Pancakes.”  I was skeptical when I looked at the ingredients of old fashioned oatmeal, cottage cheese, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg and wondered what kind of mess it would make.  However, to my delight we had this wonderful pancake that actually looked like one and tasted great.   The other recipe I tested was “Brian's Mix ‘n Match Quinoa.”  Rather than cooking the quinoa as directed, I used a rice cooker. Once cooked, I added chopped onion, chopped apples and butter.  The combination was tasty and made a nice side dish. Looking through the other recipes, I got a sense that the ingredients can be found in most pantries and definitely at a local grocery store.

Although Feldman doesn’t give any new and revealing information in “Joyful Cooking in the Pursuit of Good Health,” I do appreciate and honor her research and commitment to spreading the word about nutritional balancing.  Those that have interest in learning more about this concept will find Feldman’s work a great place to start. Her information is in lay terms and supportive of making changes to undesirable eating habits and moving forward with a healthier body and mind.
