“Star Brigade: First Renaissance” is a well written science fiction novel by first time author C.C. Ekeke. The story takes place four hundred years in our future. The Star Brigade Special Forces unit has special operative skills used to help protect the Galactic Union.

The Galactic Union of Planetary Republics is comprised of over eighty- five member worlds that involve hundreds of different types of sentient species. The unit had fallen apart after one of their special assignments went wrong and the lives of several brigadiers were lost. Their reputation suffered greatly from this. Circumstances within the Galactic Union require that the unit gets itself together and the head of the Star Brigade, Captain Nwosu takes back his command to save the union. This is where the adventure begins.

Ekeke did an excellent job of creating a plot that keeps the reader holding on in suspense. The characters take on personas that seemed real to me, even in their alien ways. He also writes in a descriptive manner that allowed me to “see” what was happening. This made the story so much more enjoyable. At the beginning of the book, there is a glossary of terms that are used throughout the book. I appreciated that this was included because it made it easy for me to refer back for a definition of an alien term.

I recommend this book to true science fiction fans that enjoy sinking their teeth into an adventure that has real depth.
