I have to admit...I’m a foodie! And having an opportunity to review a cookbook like “Everyday Southern Favorites” gives me pleasure.  For the purpose of the review we are asked to test three recipes.  The first one I tested was “Mango Salsa.”  I loved the intense lime/lemon juice that was cut with the sweetness of the mango and the fresh jalapeno pepper added to the zing. (Remember to use gloves when working with the jalapeno pepper!)  This salsa was perfect with grilled Chilean sea bass.

The second recipe I tested was “Unstuffed Cabbage.” I used to make a similar recipe years ago but the difference in this one was adding an envelope of dry onion soup mix.  The casserole was delicious and even tasted better the second day when all the flavors mellowed.

The third recipe I tested was “Spicy Orange Mashed Sweet Potatoes.”  Sweet potatoes are a southern favorite and usually baked with marshmallows on top.  This one is different because there are added spices, pecans, and orange juice and zest.  I loved the combination of all the ingredients and it certainly will make a great substitute to the traditional sweet potato dish.

Perusing the remaining recipes I realized “Everyday Southern Favorites” would make a great little gift for someone that just moved to the south and wants to try out some favorites, or for someone that is considering the southern cuisine.  Perfect as a stocking stuffer!
