Surviving a Season: Essential Advice for Young Athletes, Coaches, and Parents on Staying Healthy and Avoiding Sports Injuries
“Surviving a Season” by Dr. Michael DeFranco is a practical guide full of advice to help coaches and parents to prevent sport-related injuries in children and young adults. Dr. DeFranco writes from personal experience. He describes the increase in sport-related injuries followed by an anatomy lesson about such things as the major bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments in the body with easy to understand diagrams. Getting a brief education on these body parts helps to define the possible injuries an athlete might receive such as dislocations, fractures, sprains, and concussions. Dr. DeFranco teaches the reader a new form of CPR, “Consume calcium and vitamin D, Participate in physical activity, and Recognize risk factors for bone disease in an effort to educate about the importance of creating strong bones in the athlete.” Also, he teaches CORE principles, “Cardiovascular, Orthopaedic, Rest, and Energize, to apply during workouts in order to “maximize performance and avoid injury.” “Surviving a Season” is a short, quick read. Coaches, trainers, athletes, and parents get a nice overview of the different types of injuries and what to do to lessen them. As a parent of active sports playing children, I believe educating adults on sports safety for children is imperative. This book should be required reading for coaches. |
