“A Little Help From My Friends” follows Zoe who is a member of a group of girls who call themselves the “Miracle Girls.”  In this installment of the Miracle Girls series, Zoe faces not only family problems – but also boy problems.  With a little help from her friends, Zoe finds the strength to deal with the adversities that plague not only her – but countless other high school teenagers.  Although geared for young adults, “A Little Help From My Friends” is enjoyable and refreshing for any age.

Dayton and Vanderbilt have beautifully captured the joy of friendship amongst a close-knit group of high school girls.  Not only have they captured the joy of friendship, they brilliantly describe the petty rivalries that occur between high school social classes.  Through Zoe’s journey, Dayton and Vanderbilt put the reader into the head of a high school girl who is facing obstacles that seem larger than life.  It is easy to get wrapped up in Zoe’s predicaments and feel her excitement and anticipation, as well as sympathize with her heartache, over the choices she makes.

Despite what type of high school experience the reader may have had, “A Little Help From My Friends” delightfully illustrates what high school is really about – developing friendships that last forever; making the first hard choices of many; dealing with consequences; and growing into the adults we were meant to be.

Originally unbeknownst to this reviewer, “A Little Help From My Friends” by Anne Dayton and May Vanderbilt is the third in a series.  The book is so well written that a new Dayton and Vanderbilt reader could start with this book and not realize that a history had previously been developed with two of the other characters.  The way that the history is woven into the plotline makes it easy to start in the middle of this series.  However, after finishing “A Little Help From My Friends,” I will definitely be reading “The Miracle Girls” and “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” so that I can further enjoy the journeys the Miracles Girls’ experience.
