Time Heals All WoundsM.M. Master Poly Crown
Having been horribly violated as a child, Mercedes takes off, at the age of seventeen, to work at a club on an island in the South Pacific. Hoping for an idyllic life, instead she gets caught up in drug addiction and in a relationship with a man who ends up almost destroying her through his abuse, infidelity and enslavement. Miraculously escaping from him, she moves to Japan where she works at “Club Peaches” which is a theater/strip club. Ownership of “Club Peaches” allows the women performing there to decide how far they will go with their customers. Feeling like she is in a safe place, and empowered by her sexuality, Mercedes decides that in addition to performing on stage, she will work the private rooms. In spite of working in the sex trade industry, the fact that Mercedes is able to choose what acts she will engage in, is healing for her, because in her past, she wasn’t given a choice. While performing on stage she is also able to dramatize her feelings about what she has experienced. Through her experiences at this club, Mercedes is able to find the healing that she needs, and move on to a “normal life.” In addition to telling her story, she also expresses some very strong views about how society should put more effort into criminalizing people who victimize others, and allow prostitution to be legalized. To know that “Time Heals All Wounds” is based upon a true story of the author’s life is amazing. Reading about the abuse she suffered was absolutely gut-wrenching. To see her empower herself in the way that she did was definitely unexpected for me. I highly recommend this book, especially to women’s reader’s groups and women’s study classes. There is definitely a lot of thought-provoking material that will lead to some interesting conversations. |
