“Psycho Russian Golddigger$: A True Story” by David E. Bloch leaves the reader with a very clear message. Responding to an internet ad, Mr. Bloch begins an email and phone relationship with a Ukrainian woman, whom he intends to marry. In the past, the woman would have been referred to as a “mail order bride.” Mr. Bloch wanted to find a wife and wooed her with the intent of having a loving relationship and future children together. With a perfectly “normal” courtship via emails and phone, arrangements are made to bring the woman and her eleven-year-old daughter to the U.S. He sends her a credit card to use for expenses, and she keeps him informed of her purchases. All seems well, until she sets foot on American soil.
Once in America, there begins the unraveling of the foundation that they had established. At first there was just complaining and depression. Soon after her arrival, she becomes pregnant and gives birth to David’s daughter. There is a relatively calm period between David and his wife when their daughter is very young, but it does not last. Full-out vindictiveness and cruelty soon follow. The marriage completely disintegrates with divorce proceedings leading to false allegations about David with an attempted “beat down” of his spirit.
With that being said, I have to mention again that this is a true story told from Mr. Bloch’s perspective. I am not at all contending that the events did not happen as he described. In fact, he did a very thorough job of describing in excellent detail the events, times, and places of every aspect of their relationship from the reproduced emails to court documents. However, I just want to mention that there are two sides to every story, and I would be curious to read his ex-wife’s account of the events. He is clearly a jilted man, very full of anger. He even strongly takes lawyers and counselors to task for perceived injustices against him. I would never want to be on his bad side. Nonetheless, the book is well written. Mr. Bloch’s message of caution to anyone seeking to bring a foreigner to America to marry is made extremely clear. He blames his ex-wife for acting like a “witch” (amongst other things) because, in his opinion, “Russian values are opposite to American values. Deceiving, lying and cheating are acceptable means for her because winning is all that matters.”
In the end, Mr. Bloch may have been taken advantage of financially in order for the two women to gain American citizenship. He firmly believes this. Whatever the truth may be, I feel his angst in “Psycho Russian Golddigger$: A True Story” and hope that he can move forward and find true happiness.
